Los telescopios recomendados para expertos son aptos para cualquiera que quiera practicar la astronomía con exhaustividad, y eso incluye desde observadores avezados, hasta principiantes con una gran ambición que prefieren usar un instrumento de grandes dimensiones desde el principio.
Los telescopios para expertos no son necesariamente sistemas completos. Esto es lo que ocurre particularmente en el caso de los OTA. Optical Tube Assembly o conjunto del tubo óptico se refiere a un telescopio sin montura.
Otras ópticas "recomendadas para expertos" son aquellas con aperturas a partir de 12" (305 mm), ya que son un poco más difíciles de manejar, y los telescopios principalmente concebidos para astrofotografía, como Newtons fotográficos, ópticas RC y refractores apocromáticos.
Sin embargo, téngase en cuenta que la distinción entre principiantes, expertos y observatorios tiene fines meramente orientativos y no es excluyente.
