Estos telescopios están diseñados para uso estacionario, ya sea en un pilar fijo en el jardín o en un observatorio.
Suele tratarse de grandes ópticas RC y SC, aunque también pueden ser refractores apocromáticos de gama particularmente alta. Estos telescopios se ofertan como sistemas OTA (Optical Tube Assembly) o con una montura grande. Generalmente, las monturas se suministran con un trípode, que siempre puede usarse para ganar flexibilidad aunque la montura se instale en un pilar fijo.
Su clasificación para principiantes, expertos y observatorios tiene fines meramente orientativos y no es excluyente.
